Ongoing Projects
Project goal: integrate mental health care into the primary healthcare (PHC) system — the initiative addresses critical service gaps and aligns with the 2023 PHC Reform Roadmap, which prioritizes accessible, community-based mental health services.
- Description: This project aims to enhance the delivery of mental health services within Georgia’s primary healthcare (PHC) system by equipping providers with the knowledge and tools to manage four WHO-prioritized mental health conditions: dementia, depression, bipolar disorder, and psychosis. Through a comprehensive Training of Trainers (ToT) program, 22 PHC professionals are being prepared to lead nationwide capacity-building efforts. A key focus is on dementia care, with over 1,600 family doctors across urban and rural settings receiving specialized training to support early detection and continuous management. The initiative includes the development of a ToT curriculum, the rollout of standardized care pathways, and the introduction of a WHO-accredited continuing professional development (CPD) course on dementia. To ensure quality and sustainability, the project also incorporates supportive supervision and clinical audits. Collectively, these efforts strengthen the health system’s ability to provide accessible, high-quality mental health care, reduce reliance on psychiatric institutions, and better serve vulnerable populations.
