Green practices for safer communities: our vision for a Sustainable Georgia

Caritas Czech Republic play vital role in supporting environmental protection and sustainable development in Georgia. Through innovative programs and community-based projects, the organization addresses urgent ecological challenges. It empowers local populations with the knowledge, tools, and resilience to safeguard natural resources for future generations. From climate change preparedness to sustainable farming and waste management, our initiatives are comprehensive, impactful, and deeply rooted in community engagement.

Greener Farming for a Sustainable Future

Caritas Czech Republic has been supporting Georgian farmers for many years. In our work with rural population, we actively promote environmentally friendly agricultural practices that contribute to long-term sustainability. By introducing modern technologies such as rotational grazing and improved livestock management, we help farmers boost productivity while preserving the health of their land. These approaches prevent overgrazing and soil degradation, creating a more balanced interaction between agriculture and nature. Through training and provision of updated machinery, rural communities are equipped to protect their natural environment while enhancing their livelihoods—a true win-win for both people and the environment.

Climate Resilience through Preparedness

Climate change, sometimes resulting in natural disasters, is a global problem. Disasters caused by climate change have a negative impact on the socio-economic life of any country and its population. Georgia is not an exception. Due to the specific and complex physical-geographic conditions, different climates can be found in Georgia. Climate change in such a small country like ours can be especialy painful.

As climate change increases the frequency and severity of natural disasters, Caritas Czech Republic is working to reduce their impact by strengthening local disaster preparedness. In Oni Municipality, for example, we helped create emergency management plans that include prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. These efforts are especially important in areas at risk of floods, landslides, and wildfires. By giving local communities and authorities the tools and knowledge they need, we are  improving resilience and protecting Georgia's ecosystems and population from the growing threats of climate change.

Tackling Waste with Smart Solutions

Another cornerstone of Caritas Czech Republic’s environmental work in Georgia is its commitment to improving waste management. With up to 60% of landfill content in many regions consisting of organic waste, we have championed composting as a practical and eco-friendly solution. By distributing composting equipment and offering training to farmers and schools, the organisation enabled communities to convert organic waste into valuable fertilizer—reducing methane emissions and improving soil health. These initiatives benefit the environment and strengthen local agriculture and public health.

In parallel, our organisation has worked with local governments to modernize waste management infrastructure. This includes providing waste collection vehicles and bins and developing sustainable recycling models now adopted by several municipalities. These actions have led to cleaner environments and more efficient systems for dealing with waste, ensuring long-term impact through institutional cooperation.

Caritas Czech Republic understands that sustainable change comes through education and inclusion. That’s why the organisation places a strong emphasis on community outreach, training teachers, students, and farmers on the importance of environmental stewardship. These programs go beyond technical knowledge—they cultivate a culture of responsibility and inspire action at every level of society. This collaborative approach ensures that environmental protection becomes a shared value and everyday practice.

Why caring for our planet matters

Caritas Czech Republic’s work in Georgia exemplifies how environmental sustainability and community development can go hand in hand. By supporting sustainable farming practices, building climate resilience, improving waste management, and fostering environmental education, we are helping to create a more sustainable future for both people and the planet. Through these initiatives, we are empowering communities to protect their natural resources, adapt to the challenges of climate change, and contribute to a cleaner, greener environment. As we continue these efforts, our organisation remains committed to working alongside local populations to build a more sustainable and resilient Georgia for generations to come.
