Ambassador of Israel to Georgia H.E Ran Gidor visited to Zugdidi Screening Center

On September 24, 2020, H.E. Ran Gidor, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Israel to Georgia visited Zugdidi Screening Center and handed over a gift of gynecologic and surgical instruments together with Jan Blinka, the Head of Mission Of Caritas Czech Republic in Georgia.

With this the parties join the awareness raising campaign of Czech Caritas “Cancer Screening Awareness Challenge 2020!” and mark “Purple September” – world gynecologic cancer awareness month. With this the parties will once again remind the population about importance of prevention and screening of oncologic diseases.

This year the main message of the campaign is to raise awareness especially about gynecological cancer symptoms and human papilloma virus (HPV) prevention, in concept with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global strategy for eliminating cervical cancer.

HPV is a cause of cervical cancer which is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide. In 2018, an estimated 570 000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer worldwide and about 311000 women died from the disease. To address this problem, WHO defines the complex public health strtegy: awareness raising, vaccination, secondary prevention (screening) and early detection of cancer and timely treatment.

For information, In Georgia, national cancer screening programs are available from 2008. In Samegrelo region the programs are already accessible geographically from November, 2019 in Zugdidi Screening Center, which was developed in the frame of Caritas Czech Republic project with the financial support of Czech Development Agency. The center has already provided screening services to more than 1000 persons in the region and despite covid19 pandemic continues actively implement national cancer screening programs.
