Caritas Czech Republic Sumed up the Two-Year Results of the Czech Development Agency-Funded Zugdidi

On November 25, 2021, Caritas Czech Republic organized a closing round table to sum up the two-year achievements and challenges of the Czech Development Agency-funded Zugdidi Screening Center.

At the event, Zugdidi Screening Center’s medical staff represented the results of the implementation of the state programs for breast, cervical, colorectal, and prostate cancer screening programs and talked about the clinic’s future plans. Afterward, Nino Skhulukhia, the representative of the Zugdidi City Hall, talked about the importance of the municipal cancer early detection programs conducted in the Zugdidi Screening Center.

The event was attended by Petr Mykiska – Czech Ambassador to Georgia, Mamuka Tsotseria – Zugdidi City Mayor, Giorgi Guguchia – Governor of Samegrelo-Upper Svaneti, Jan Blinka – Caritas Czech Republic’s Head of Mission and Tamar Kurtanidze – Caritas Czech Republic’s Project Manager. The guests were hosted by the Zugdidi Screening Center administrative and medical staff led by Rema Gvamichava, Director of the center.

The project Establishment and Promotion of Cancer Screening Center was funded by the Czech Development Agency, and was implemented by Caritas Czech Republic (CCR) in close cooperation with Cancer Prevention Center (CPC). The main achievement of this project is that now Zugdidi Screening Center is implementing National Screening Programs through National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC) i.e. it provides free of charge screening services funded by the Government of Georgia.

The center was opened in November 2019 and aims at providing equal geographic as well as financial accessibility to national cancer screening programs (breast, cervical, colorectal cancer screening and prostate cancer program) in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region as well as for the population in Abkhazia given the proximity of the border.

Since its opening in November 2019, Zugdidi Screening Center provides state programs for breast, cervical, colorectal, and prostate cancer screening for the whole population of West Georgia. Except that, it also provides therapeutic, gynecological, endocrinological, and other types of examinations and tests. After two years, more than 7 000 locals have already benefited from these medical services.

The center is staffed with highly qualified medical personnel, whose continuous education and professional development are constantly taken care of by both Caritas Czech Republic and the center's management. To ensure quality medical services, during this period, our organization has been providing the center’s personnel with various professional trainings.
